A lotta people ask me for recommendations for good food in Flushing, NY. Well, probably cus I keep tooting my horn about how manhattan's Chinatown sucks (except for Big Wing Wong and Cong Ly). Anyhow, I just wrote this list of recommendations for a friend and decided to share it on this blog that nobody reads =)
Mingzhongle

Mongolian BBQ - Get all the cumin skewers you crave for in a sit down environment with coal powered bbqs IN the tables. They also offer japanese tatami private rooms for parties of 4 or more I think. Its like a Chinese/Mongol style Izakaya, great for drinking, but the lighting is a bit fluorescenty the last time I went.
Happy Family Little Lamb

Best chinese style shabu shabu. Ask for the half spicy, half non-spicy pot. Avoid the gonads :-).
Imperial Palace
http://www.yelp.com/biz/imperial-palace-flushing
Cantonese style seafood place. Everyone gets the dungeness crab steamed inside sticky rice. My Yelp review below:
"My favorite place to introduce my non-Chinese friends to authentic Cantonese seafood. I've tested it on Koreans, Americans and even Russians. Not once has this place failed me. Dishes arrive piping hot (a must for canto foodies), seafood comes fresh and the selection is bountiful. Pretty much everything is good here - just look at the chef special pictures on the menu! There are of course the de-facto chinese staples here as well - all on par with even HK restaurants. Dishes to recommend: Jelly Fish, Crab with Sticky Rice, XO Sauce Squid, Seafood Rolls, Duck tongue (for advanced chinese eaters) and fried flounder."
Flushing Mall

For variety, you can come here. They have Xi'An famous foods, shaved ice, sizzling pepper steaks, beef noodle, stinky tofu, and dumpling stands. Honestly though, I like this place (more ghetto) more than Anthony Bourdain's spot: http://www.yelp.com/biz/lamb-noodle-soup-flushing
Fu Run
http://www.yelp.com/biz/fu-run-flushing
Northern style Chinese. Get the muslim lamb chops, watercress veggies, braised pork elbow, and green bean sheet jelly dish.
Peking Duck Sandwich Stall

They also have other skewers available at the takeout window including squid and fishballs. The restaurant that it is a part of, Corner 28, is not bad too for no frills Cantonese food.
Great House

Best place for aforementioned no frills Cantonese Food. Roast pig is unbelievable. You can order takeout of course and eat by the library with all the other squatting patrons =)
Spicy & Tasty

In the mood for spicy? Come here for the best dan dan noodles, double cook pork, pork blood, braised tofu, and other sichuan style dishes.
Sentosa

If you are not in the mood for Chinese, come here for some authentic Malay food and get all the roti canai and Hainanese chicken you need.
Nanxiang Dumplings

Best dumplings. Even better, in my opinion, than the ultra thin ones I found at the famous Ding Tai Fung in Taiwan.
A Taste of Shanghai

All around they are not great, but their shanghainese "Sheng Jian Bao" which are pork filled buns that are steamed and then pan fried are AMAZING. I saw an old chinese guy down two plates BY HIMSELF there. Their braised pork shoulder with shanghainese bok choy are also great. And definitely the best 8 treasure rice cake dessert I've had in new york.
Gu-Shine Taiwanese
http://www.yelp.com/biz/gu-shine-taiwanese-restaurant-flushing
Authentic Taiwanese food, homestyle. This place is where I take Jenny when she craves the Taiwanese staples: tea eggs, pork chop over rice, beef noodle soup, oyster pancake, 3 cup chicken, chili oil wontons, clam soup and rice with brown meat sauce (lu rou fan).
White Bear

Best best wonton place. This place changes your mind about "wontons". These are not your run of the mill hong kong style wontons. These are straight from the motherland and the place looks like one right out of the streets of Harbin, China where I studied abroad.
