Acknowledging the need to "spice up" the wwe.com website and do something "out-of-the-box" lead to the creation of the WWE SummerSlam Microsite. Having came up with the concept ourselves, we were emotionally invested in the idea and were ready to do what needs to be done. Additionally, SummerSlam was quickly approaching and we could not wait for an official green flag to begin development. We decided to act proactively and thus started storyboarding, designing, prototyping and developing for the microsite long before everyone else gave us the official go-ahead.
The challenges did not only include the aforementioned. Our "eyes were bigger than our stomachs". We wanted to impress our fans with a contest worthy site, but we were only a team of two. As such, we sought for inspiration for simple yet outstanding techniques and scoured the company for usable resources.
We eventually hit the jackpot with our TV Studios department - finding a wealth of alpha channel footage of our superstars. I guess this was inevitable since the line between Web and TV has become more and more indiscernible over the years. And for inspiration, we turned to the
panning and saturation techniques that seemed to be the trend for TV commercials at the time. Though popular amongst the TV medium, it wasn't done before on the web - at least to our knowledge.
After obtaining the video resources and settling on a creative direction, establishing the tone for the website and developing it was just protocol. The resulting effects and the website received much praise internally within the WWE and externally with our fans.
